CITY AS A DIALOGUE
Ekta Chauhan
LA84
With a background in history, urban studies and public policy, Ekta Chauhan researches in the fields of cities, cultures and communities. Her recent book, Sheher Mein Gaon, explores Delhi’s rural–urban dynamics, revealing how everyday lives, histories, and spaces intertwine to shape the city’s evolving social and cultural landscape. Here, Ekta reflects on her book, and experiences that have shaped her thoughts and views.
What inspired you to write Sheher Mein Gaon? Could you share how your personal and academic journey led you to explore the subject of Delhi’s villages? How has your belonging to the urban village of Khirki informed and enriched your research?

The inspiration for Sheher Mein Gaon really began at home, with the stories my grandparents told me while growing up in Khirki. I think for many of us, our first introduction to history is not through textbooks but through family stories—tales of what once was, who lived where, and how the neighbourhood came to be. It was only after losing my grandparents that I realized how fragile and valuable those memories were. That’s what drew me to oral history as a discipline during my master’s—it gave me a language to understand the power of lived memory.
