EDITORIAL
Manoj Misra—civil servant turned activist whose tireless work for the environmental health of river Yamuna has been highly inspirational—passed away recently. In a special tribute, Saurabh Popli remembers him as a crusader who stood unequivocally for peace, equity, and creative co-existence.
Since its inception, the project profile section of the LA Journal has been one of the most challenging features. Many times, professional practices are invited to share their works which are largely based on cultural and environmental values – design aesthetics, contextual approach, experimentation and innovation, and environmental sensitivity and of course with a maturity of planting, not necessarily in that order, to bring in a strong sense of place and experience. The journal has also featured winning entries of many professional design competitions organized across the country.
This issue features some of the winning entries of the tenth cycle of ISOLA Honors and Awards 2022. Also featured is the Matrimandir Gardens competition at Auroville that promotes the idea of a participatory approach in design. It is one of the values promoted in the book 250 Things a Landscape Architect Should Know, reviewed by Rajat Ray. The book is inspired by the life and works of the late Michael Sorkin, who authored a list in his 250 Things an Architect Should Know.
Suneet Mohindru’s practice has been an interesting mix of multi-contextual engagements with nature and culture while responding to the brief in hand. In a special profile section, the landscape architect shares his journey, inspirations, and set of values that guide his work.
Ebba Koch’s vast scholarship of the Mughal times in the Indian subcontinent in the form of articles, books and publications, seminars, and workshops has been an enlightening source of inspiration for interested scholars and practitioners across the world. The Journal has been fortunate to share her many works and thoughts in some of its earlier issues. In this issue, her new book The Planetary King: Humayun Padshah, Inventor and Visionary on the Mughal Throne is reviewed by Rabindra J. Vasavada.
In a special feature, narrations through the evocative artwork of Vastavikta Bhagat, an architect, become a medium to create a contextual orientation and raise environmental and social concerns about mining in the ecologically fragile region of Goa. Reviewed by Neeraj Bhagat, Durga Pujo and the City of Kolkata: Urban Transformation and Temporal Space by Anjan Mitra, celebrates the essence of a unique community festival while focusing on some aspects that a spatial designer may find common in her approach. We take this moment to remember eminent art historian Catherine E.B. Asher—whose scholarly work on South Asian Art History and Architecture will inspire generations of scholars and young students in the region and the world..
We hope you enjoy the issue.
