After two years of being produced in digital format, LA Journal resumes its print version from the first issue of this year. We welcome Sujata Kohli to our Advisory Board of the Journal and look forward to her guidance.

In the context of a fast-expanding development, different concerns related to conservation of natural resources – soil, water, vegetation, and ecology become very crucial. S.D. Mahajan, eminent ecologist based in Pune, who is a mentor and guide to many generations of students of ecology and natural science, shares his views in regard to aspects of urban ecology and environment. Some of these find mention in the essay, Ediblescapes where Anita Tikoo raises a query—and demonstrates with example of her own home garden— about the possibility of harnessing the resources within the city to address the problem of food, ecology, and water, while promoting the idea of urban agriculture.

A special profile feature showcases the professional journey, inspirations and views of Shishir R. Raval, landscape architect based in Vadodara, associated with academics, practice and now advocacy issues. Under the theme of intersection of various artforms and design, The Poem of the Right Angle, a compilation of Le Corbusier’s poems on nature and philosophy unravels an interesting facet of his personality. Many of these ideas find reflections in the designer’s works in later years. Rendering with landscape design and music throws light on the commonalities in music and landscape design and discuss the nuances of these artforms in creating a sense of place. Separately, a story of the evolution of life on Earth gets embodied in the design of a public park, the narrative disseminated through various artworks, looks at the site as a place for recreation, education and creative immersion.

To celebrate 200 years of Brazilian independence this year, various events are proposed in India that showcase the culture and legacy of this South American country. An ongoing exhibition Burle Marx at Sunder Nursery –
a photographic essay by Leonardo Finotti,
showcases the exemplary works of Roberto Burle Marx, foremost Brazilian landscape artist and designer of 20th century. On the occasion, Verena Andreatta and Farès el-Dahdah look at and analyze some of Rio de Janeiro iconic public spaces designed by Burle Marx, while another article explores the relevance of his thoughts and works in context of present times.

Passing away of Anuradha Mathur is a great loss to the landscape discipline. A sharp, perceptive and sensitive mind, she will be remembered for her for the path-breaking research works that have enlightened and informed new ways of looking at landscapes.
