EMERGING LANDSCAPE PRACTICES

We begin the year 2026, with a special issue that profiles twenty one landscape practices established since 2012–13. While most are based in western (Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Jaipur) and southern (Bengaluru) cities—with a smaller presence in the north (Jalandhar) and east (Kolkata)—their work extends across far wider geographies. Location, clearly, no longer limits reach.
The majority of these studios operate as proprietorships, with some founded in partnership with architects and urban designers, offering integrated services across architecture, urban design, interiors, and landscape. There is a diversity of contemporary practice models— hybrid setups, small and experimental studios, and nonconventional approaches to scale, typology, representation, and societal engagement. Landscape architecture today is more widely understood and increasingly valued by authorities and decision-makers, particularly for its transformative role in public spaces and urban parks.
Equally significant is the widening of professional engagement. Landscape architects now work not only with allied consultants but also with bureaucrats, politicians, NGOs, RWAs, and market associations. As public spaces become key arenas of intervention, issues of participation, inclusivity, affordability, sustainability, and long-term maintenance have moved to the centre of practice—concerns that were once marginal or altogether absent. This expanded terrain has made landscape practice more complex, culturally rooted, and intellectually fertile...
