THE STORY OF A THOUSAND PARKS
REVIVAL OF THE BBMP PARKS OF BENGALURU

LA81
Bengaluru, known as the Garden City, has its iconic Cubbon Park and Lalbagh covering less than 4% of its green spaces. Nearly 75% are neighborhood parks developed by BBMP, with over 1,000 such parks contributing to the green space of this garden city. Reading Grounds reproposes the BBMP’s template to enhance these parks, reclaiming the green spaces effectively.
It was 2021, just after the lockdown. As we took a stroll through a park in Bangalore, we wondered how this landscape would have been about a three decades ago. The park that we were taking a leisure stroll through was one of the over thousand such parks maintained by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike or BBMP – the administrative body responsible for civic amenities and some infrastructural assets of the Greater Bangalore metropolitan area. We wondered, if these parks form a substantial proportion of green cover of Bengaluru City, then shouldn’t Bengaluru be called a park city instead of a garden city? What is the distinction between a park and a garden, anyway?
