A GARDEN CITY CHRONICLE: LALBAGH
Review by Seema Mundoli
LA81
Suresh Jayaram’s book weaves personal memories with Bengaluru’s history, highlighting Lalbagh’s botanical, cultural, and colonial heritage, celebrating the Thigala community’s legacy in shaping the Garden City.
What new information could another book on Lalbagh, the 420-acre park located in the center of Bengaluru city provide? After all, this is a park about which much has already been written. But Suresh Jayaram’s Bangalore’s Lalbagh: A Chronicle of the Garden and the City adds one interesting perspective–of the garden through his eyes while growing up in the city. It is especially heartening to see a book written by a member of the Thigala community. This community has significantly contributed to giving Bengaluru the title of “Garden City”.
