Historically, the question of legacy was embedded within familial networks. With shifts in family structures, career choices, and increased global mobility, the legacy has stepped outside of the family. The dissociation from family to an extent adds value to the legacy. For teachers, it inadvertently gets most deeply embedded in the students and academic peer group. This expands in the case of Narayani Gupta as evidenced in the book, Cities, Citizens, Classrooms & Beyond which builds on her legacy as a historian, teacher, civil society activist, and a person with a deep love for history. The book is a submission of the enduring impact of Gupta’s life work that includes ‘her pioneering scholarship, concern with the fate of Delhi and campaigns to make the city a habitable space, editing, and authoring school textbooks in Hindi and English, guidebooks to historical sites for children, and promoting innovative teaching methods’. The book is thus, a dedication, and showcases the continuation of her ideas, beliefs, and research in the work of other scholars. Its value lies in that it is neither biographical nor autobiographical, but maps her influence, directly or indirectly on a range of scholarship associated with urban studies and teaching.
