Innovative Architecture Through the Ages by Ram Sharma, presents over two hundred architectural marvels across eras and geographies. Blending description with reflection, it captures lived experiences, cultural values, and enduring principles of architecture, inspiring readers to look beyond form and discover the resilience, identity, and beauty that give architecture its soul.
Innovative architecture develops new ideas. It uses technology in novel ways and modifies materials to create distinctive buildings. This book brings together almost 200 examples. It is for people interested in the essence and evolution of architecture, including students and practitioners. Its focus on innovation aims to show how a structure or building history can diverge from the norm. The book makes readers think about the miracles wrought in architecture and ‘what if ’ they had not occurred.
The book is the vision of architect Ram Sharma. It was shaped by his education, practice, teaching, travel, and thought. Editing it was a challenge for Malay and me, but it brought immeasurable learning and joy. Which sites from the universe of ‘Ram’s travels’ should be included? How should we organize them? We felt a chronological approach would tell the story best and teach well. Should India stand alone or be immersed in the world? We did both. Many ideas and considerations created the structure, titles, introductory, bridging, and concluding text.
