In 2016 Sasaki was invited to advance a process under the leadership of the then President Ashraf Ghani and the Afghan Ministry of Urban Development and Housing to establish a vision and a roadmap for transforming the city into a model of sustainable, equitable, and resilient development. This became known as the Kabul Urban Design Framework.
When we presented the Kabul Urban Design Framework plan in 2018, the President noted that “our work is about 21st-century urbanism, it harnesses natural assets, it is pro-women, it is focused on the poor, it is citizen-centered, it proposes a system for knowledge engagement, and it provides a spatial framework for prioritization.” This captured the essence of our collaborative vision...
