“Natural Heritage” and “Architectural Heritage” at INTACH
In some cases built heritage is set in formal landscapes and in other cases heritage buildings may have large premises of which only a small fraction may be a formal landscape whereas the greater area may be a wildscape. For example, in many forts, the large enclosed areas are wild hosting habitats and wildlife refuges. This may even happen within cities [eg. Tughlaqabad] and certainly in the countryside where many forts are actually a part of wildlife sanctuaries [eg. Ranthambhor]. Settings such as Neermahal in Tripura’s Rudrasagar lake require knowledge of limnology. Jalmahal lake, Jaipur, with its lake palace requires a joint effort. Even in formal landscapes [eg. Roshanara Bagh in Delhi or Pinjore Gardens] natural heritage is rich in both flora and fauna which complements the built heritage. Thus, depending on the project characteristics, there is scope for a joint effort. In other instances, however, there is no overlap.
