BRAJ ARCHITECTURE OF THE PARIKRAMA USM’s Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture & Environmental Studies KRVIA, Mumbai LA 76
EThe landscape of Braj is said to be the place where Hindu God Krishna grew up. It is circumscribed by a 252 km-long pilgrimage across Mathura, Gokul, Govardhan and Vrindavan. Each of these cities has its own beliefs and myths that are reiterated through specific sites along the parikrama. These narratives lead to specific practices that are deeply embedded in the everyday lives of the sites.
In 2018-19, 80 Third Year Architecture students along with the faculty of KRVIA documented 72 sites examining the relationship between the imagined and the everyday in the architecture of the spaces of the pilgrimage. These were the pilgrimages around the town of Govardhan, the sacred mountain which is said to be the centre of Braj. Gokul, with its scattered farmlands is the landscape where Krishna is supposed to have spent his childhood. Mathura is an important administrative centre and is the place known to be the birthplace of Krishna. Vrindavan is the town that has grown over the forest in which Krishna sang and danced with his gopis.
