URBAN RIVER SPACES IN JHENAIDAH
Khondaker Hasibul Kabir
LA80
The Urban River Spaces project in this process received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and UIA 2030 award in 2022.
The project is a spontaneous reflection of the collective aspirations of people. Through numerous co-creation workshops with people, neglected and disconnected spaces along the river Naboganga got the most significance. In the old days, Jhenaidah was a river-centric city that got lost with time. When it was asked what kind of city they wanted the elderly group responded firmly, “A river-centric city that will give pleasure to our eyes. When we can realize this in a small part of both sides of the river it will eventually spread citywide.” Later, many public spaces were co-designed primarily along the river. Till now implemented projects areincrementally built public ghat in the confluence of the river, a walkway adjacent to that, Shatbariya community ghat, and reconnection with the river by opening up different walls and obstacles. Among the proposed projects there are numerous water gardens (biological treatment of wastewater from drains falling into the river), small-scale community ghats, pondside development as public spaces, reuse of old prisons and old guest houses, cultural performance spaces, nature priority spaces, public toilets and 4-kilometre water edges along the river, etc.
