The role of riverfronts in the psyche of Indian cities has undergone a complete transformation over the centuries. In ancient times, riverfronts were the birth places of civilizations (Indus Valley); religious, sacred and spiritually symbolic places (Varanasi, Mathura, Allahabad) with ghats; as symbols of living and sustenance, (Punj “aab”), romance, drama and scenery (Shahjahanabad, Mughal gardens of Agra, Taj Mahal). Later, riverfronts functioned as commercial centres, transportation hubs and manufacturing centres (Kanpur). In the last century, rivers across India have become ill maintained open drains, carrying the burden of urban sewage, completely forgotten and neglected (Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Tavi, Satluj and the list goes on). . . .
